Artificial Eye Information,

What is an Artificial Eye?

When a patient has to have an eye surgically removed, doctors will often recommend the option of getting an artificial eye. The implant will maintain the shape of the face and will give the patient more confidence after surgery.

    What is an Artificial Eye?

  1. An artificial eye, or ocular prosthesis, is a prosthetic unit that is the same size and volume as a human eye. The artificial eye is created to look as much like the opposing eye as possible
  2. How to Get an Artificial Eye

  3. A patient who needs an artificial eye is referred to an ocularist by his eye doctor. The ocularist will provide an initial evaluation, and a prosthetic fitting, as well as iris color matching, will take follow.
  4. Artificial Eyes and Vision

  5. It is not possible to see out of the artificial eye, but some patients have reported being able to see better after having the eye implanted, since the prosthesis takes away the tension or stress from the space where the eye has been removed.
  6. What is an Artificial Eye Made Of?

  7. Eye implants can be made from porous material, as well as fat graft tissue. Eye muscles are often attached to the implant in order to provide a realistic range of motion.
  8. How Long the Artificial Eye Lasts

  9. The material the artificial eye is made of will determine how long it will last. Plastic artificial eyes will last longer than glass eyes when they are cared for properly; some patients will need to have their prosthesis replaced every five years, but quality eye pieces can last as long as 30 years.
